HOUSTON, TX – As many as seven lots of 6-count cucumber products have been recalled by Dairyland Produce, LLC, dba Hardie’s Fresh Foods, after officials determined that they may bear traces of the organism Salmonella.
While healthy individuals who are infected with Salmonella may get a fever, suffer (sometimes bloody) diarrhea, or experience nausea, vomiting, and pain in the abdomen, the symptoms in this population are typically short-term. In those with weakened immune systems, including young children and the frail and elderly, the infection could turn serious and even fatal. There have also been rare cases in which a Salmonella infection led to more severe conditions: arterial infections (such as infected aneurysms), endocarditis, as well as arthritis, among other illnesses in which the Salmonella organism enters the bloodstream.
Initiated by Dairyland Produce, LLC, on December 5, 2024, and announced on the FDA website on December 7, 2024, the recall covers cucumber products that were made available for sale at Costco stores throughout two major Texas metros: Houston and Dallas.
As can be referenced in the image attached to the FDA communication, the affected products come packaged in clear plastic bags with simple pink and white labels. Officials say only the following lot codes are impacted: X2377074, X2379602, X2381000, X2381080, X2383400, X2384557, and X2384587.
The recall was prompted by a recall that was set in motion by the company’s own supplier, SunFed Produce, LLC, whose cucumbers were usually repackaged by Hardie’s Fresh Foods. After learning of SunFed Produce’s connection to a number of reported illnesses involving a potential Salmonella contamination, all further production and distribution of the cucumber product was suspended.
Officials urge anyone who may have purchased the now-recalled cucumbers to refrain from consuming them. To receive a complete refund, the products may be taken back to the point of purchase.
For recall-related questions, the company may be reached at 1-281-697-7067. Calls are monitored Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time.
