On June 11, 2026 NBC4 reported that a female swimmer drowned at Alum Creek Park on Wednesday afternoon. At the time of reporting, the female’s age had not been reported as the case was still under investigation.
Sadly, drownings and near-drownings are not uncommon in Ohio. From Lake Erie to our many lakes, rivers and swimming areas, water recreation can have risks. Under Ohio law, Section 1533.181 – Ohio Revised Code | Ohio Laws swimming is generally considered a recreational activity, and swimmers generally accept known and inherent dangers associated with being in the water.
Additionally, public swimming areas mean that governmental entities may not be able to be sued for negligence under Ohio’s political subdivision immunity laws. Section 2744.03 – Ohio Revised Code | Ohio Laws The existence of lifeguards, warning signs, buoys or designated swimming areas does not necessarily eliminate those immunities, although each case depends on its specific facts and circumstances.
Private property owners and private lifeguards might be held liable if they negligently perform duties, including the supervision or protection of swimmers.
When recreating this summer, follow these simple safety tips to help mitigate your risk and prevent accidental drownings.
- Only swim in designated swimming areas
- Do not dive in water if you are unsure of the depth or if there are objects like rocks under the water that you may not see
- Wear a life jacket when out in open water, even if you’re a strong swimmer
- Children should always wear life jackets
- Don’t drink and operate boats or jet skis or ride with someone who has been drinking
- Use caution when walking around docks, pool decks, rocks and other slippery surfaces around water
Bottom Line: Swimming can be fun, but it has risks. Currents, changing water conditions, limited visibility and other hazards can quickly turn a day at the water into a tragedy. Whenever possible, swim with a buddy and exercise caution around any body of water.
