ReNU

In March of 2006, ReNu with MoistureLoc, a popular contact lens cleanser solution manufactured by Bausch & Lomb, became associated with a severe upsurge in fungal eye infections.

The fusarium keratitis infection, which may be caused by bacteria, fungus, virus or protozoa, produces inflammation of the cornea. Aside from the damage to the cornea, the afflicted contact lens wearer may also endure at least three months of treatments and permanent scarring of the cornea or even the following: total loss of corneal function, corneal transplant, and blindness.

In response to the reported cases of infections, Bausch & Lomb stopped deliveries to Hong Kong and Singapore, where the cases were first recorded. But in the United States, Bausch & Lomb sustained sales and deliveries of ReNu with MoistureLoc. According to federal law, the corporation should have reported the 35 cases of fusarium keratitis to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). But the corporation failed to do so.

When fusarium keratitis broke out in the United States, evidence pointed out that Bausch & Lomb had prior knowledge of the likely connection of ReNu and the fungal infection. The corporation had been known for a month about the link, but still failed to report this fact to US authorities. Only when a New Jersey ophthalmologist notified the government about treating three patients with fusarium did the authorities discover the problem. Bausch & Lomb stopped sales of ReNu, but only after numerous customers’ eyes were seriously affected.
