FRANKLIN COUNTY, OH – One person died Thursday afternoon due to a fiery two-vehicle wreck on Interstate 270 near Grove City, reports ABC6.
According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, the fatal accident took place on the westbound lanes near State Route 104 at about 3:26 p.m. Deputies and emergency responders were on the scene shortly after.
Preliminary details indicate that a white Freightliner semi tractor-trailer was heading westbound on I-270 when it began slowing down for traffic ahead. At one point, it was struck from the back by a westbound driver in a white 2000 GMC van who had failed to slow down.
The impact of the crash caused the van to catch fire. Despite efforts from the semi driver and multiple bystanders to rescue the adult driver, adult passenger, and a juvenile passenger from the van, the adult passenger was trapped inside the wreckage and died from their injuries at the scene.
Officials have not disclosed the conditions of the surviving occupants, but no injuries to the semi driver were reported.
It’s unclear at this time whether charges are expected to be filed.
