Man Fatally Hit by Vehicle After Exiting Disabled Car in East Columbus

COLUMBUS, OH – Authorities are investigating a hit-and-run collision Monday morning in Columbus’ east side that claimed the life of a 43-year-old man, according to FOX 28.

The fatal incident occurred at the corner of Stelzer Road and East 5th Avenue, near Africentric High School and just northwest of the Columbus VA Medical Center. First responders were dispatched to the scene shortly after 10:35 a.m.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the man was driving a Chevy Impala in the area when the vehicle became disabled, prompting the driver to get out from the car. Officials say the man was standing on the nearby concrete median when a Chevy Silverado collided with and pushed his Impala forward about 100 feet.

The victim, who was struck during the collision, was pushed onto the roadway and suffered critical injuries. He was rushed to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Silverado, who ran from the crash site, was later found in the 3200 block of Allegheny Avenue and taken into custody.

An investigation by the Columbus Police Accident Investigation Unit remains in progress.
