TYRONE, PA – Consumers are warned that 1.25-ounce packages of Gardners Candies-branded Cappuccino Meltaway Bars have been recalled by Gardners Candies because undeclared tree nuts may be present in the product, according to the FDA.
The mislabeling presents a risk to those who live with an allergy or major sensitivity to cashews or other tree nuts, as consuming the product may lead to a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction.
Announced by the company on December 27, 2024, the recall covers products that were made available for sale in the U.S. at retail stores and via mail orders through www.GardnersCandies.com starting September 1, 2024.
As shown in the product photo attached to the FDA communication, a Gardners Candies brand Cappuccino Meltaway Bar can be recognized by its 1.25-ounce, or 35g, white plastic package, with lot #082725 and expiration date 08/27/25 printed along the side. Consumers may also encounter the product as part of a Gardners Meltaway Treat Box bearing lot #101625, or 112525. The boxes are described as generic and holiday-themed, containing two Cappuccino Meltaway Bars and other bars of various flavors.
While Garners Candies has not received any reports of illness in connection with the recalled products, officials initiated the recall after learning that products containing tree nut were distributed in packaging that fail to list tree nuts as allergens in the ingredient panel. The mislabeling was attributed to a temporary lapse in the company’s production and packaging protocols.
At the time of the December 27, 2024, FDA announcement, the company was working to address the cause of the issue, and all further production of the product had been halted.
