Aldi, La Bonne Vie Among Brands Impacted by Savencia Cheese USA Recall of Soft-Ripened Cheeses

NEW HOLLAND, PA – A selection of soft-ripened cheeses under multiple brands has been recalled by Savencia Cheese USA due to a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination, according to the FDA.

While those with healthy immune systems who are infected may only experience short-lived symptoms like “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea,” the organism has been known to cause severe, sometimes fatal infections in young children and elderly people. Pregnant women who are infected may also suffer miscarriages or stillbirths.

In a company announcement on November 4, 2024, the company identified as many as seven different products affected by the recall. The cheeses, which were all manufactured in the company’s Lena facility, were distributed to limited regions within the United States. The recalled products are listed in the November 5, 2024 FDA announcement, which can be referenced for more information with regard to each cheese’s respective UPCs and manufacturing dates:

  • Aldi Emporium Selection Brie, 12/8oz Brie – Best Buy Date 12/24/2024
  • Supreme Oval 7oz, 6/7oz – Best Buy Date 12/24/2024
  • La Bonne Vie Brie, 6/8oz – Best Buy Date 12/24/2024
  • La Bonne Vie Camember, 6/8oz – Best Buy Date 12/24/2024
  • 12/8oz Industrial Brie – Best Buy Date 12/24/2024
  • Market Basket Brie 6/8oz – Best Buy Date 12/24/2024
  • Glenview Farms Spreadable Brie, 2/3lb – Best Buy Date 1/13/2025

Consumers should note that only the products listed above are covered by the recall. At the time of the FDA announcement, the company had already alerted the few retail partners that had received the potentially contaminated products. While many affected products were already in the process of being removed from store shelves, anyone who may have purchased a recalled item is asked to not consume it. For a complete refund, consumers are encouraged to return their recalled products to the point of purchase.

At the time of the FDA communication, the company had not received any confirmed reports of related illness or other adverse health events.

Officials explained that while no contaminated product was found during its finished product testing, other routine testing indicated that the processing equipment at the manufacturing site may have come into contact with Listeria monocytogenes. Following the discovery, the company identified and voluntarily recalled the above products as a precaution.
