FRANKLIN COUNTY, OH – Two people were fatally struck by a vehicle following a minor collision on New Year’s Day near southwest Columbus, reports NBC4i.
The double-fatal incident unfolded at the intersection of Alkire Road and Norton Road, in Galloway. Authorities were dispatched to the area at about 12:55 a.m.
According to the Columbus Division of Police, two people, ages 56 and 53, were standing outside their Hyundai Elantra, which was stopped and disabled in the roadway following a non-injury, two-vehicle crash. While exchanging information with the other motorist, the two pedestrians and the Hyundai were struck by a Dodge Dakota pickup truck that entered the intersection from the west side.
At about 1:00 a.m., first responders pronounced the 56-year-old victim deceased at the scene. The 53-year-old victim, who was critically injured, was rushed to an area hospital where they also succumbed to their injuries.
Authorities have confirmed that one driver was taken into custody for operating a vehicle while impaired.
