FRANKLIN COUNTY, OH – Two people were injured, one critically, Saturday night after a collision on U.S. 33 near southeast Columbus, according to NBC4i.
The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said the wreck occurred near Bixby Road, in the Canal Winchester area, at around 10:34 p.m.
An early investigation indicates one driver in a white Ford van was heading westbound on US-33 at the same time a driver in a grey Toyota 4 Runner was traveling eastbound on the highway. At one point, the Toyota made a left turn in the direct path of the Ford, causing the vehicles to collide.
Following the impact, the Toyota came to rest facing south and blocking both lanes of the highway. The van, which was sent off the roadway’s north side, came to a stop in a nearby ditch.
While both vehicles caught on fire, both drivers were able to either self-extricate or be rescued from their vehicles before the flames reached them.
First responders rushed both drivers to an area hospital, where the driver of the Toyota was listed in critical condition. Officials said the driver of the Ford was stable at the time of transport.
An investigation by the sheriff’s office remains in progress.
