A large wave of grief was felt through the Columbus community last Thursday night as sudden news spread of the tragic death of 31-year-old NHL player Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew. The brothers were struck by a suspected drunk driver while riding bicycles in their hometown of New Jersey, just before their sister’s wedding.
Johnny, a beloved figure in the hockey community, was known for his exceptional talent and sportsmanship. His untimely passing has left a void that will be deeply felt by fans, teammates, and loved ones. Family describes him as an excellent player and a loving husband, father, and friend. His brother, Matthew Gaudreau, also played hockey professionally before becoming a high-school hockey coach in 2022.
A Stark Reminder of Road Safety
New Jersey State Police completed several field sobriety tests on Sean Higgins, 41, driver of the vehicle who hit the bicyclists, which he then failed and was taken into custody. This heartbreaking incident highlights the dangers of drunk driving and the importance of responsible behavior on the road.
The Oliver Law Office gives our heartfelt condolences to the Gaudreau family for their loss.
