Child dies following multi-injury collision on I-77 in Washington County

WASHINGTON COUNTY, OH – A rollover collision early Sunday, July 21, near Dexter City resulted in the death of a 6-year-old child and injured several others, including two other children, reports WTAP.

The fatal accident took place on a stretch of Interstate 77 at milepost 17, near the intersection with West Fork Duck Creek.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a 2022 Chrysler Voyager was heading northbound on the highway when it entered a median, went underneath an overpass, launched a minivan over an embankment, and then flipped into Duck Creek. Officials said it the Chrysler then struck an embankment and came to a final stop on its roof.

The 6-year-old child, who was in a booster seat at the time of the wreck, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

OHSP said a 62-year-old patient was airlifted to Grant Medical Center for major injuries, while three other occupants, including a 32-year-old, an 11-year-old, and a 1-year-old, were taken to Marietta Memorial for injuries considered non-life-threatening.

An investigation remains underway, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to have contributed to the crash.
