H5N1 Contamination Prompts Wild Coast Raw to Recall Raw Cat Food

OLYMPIA, WA – Concerns regarding possible contamination with bird flu have prompted Wild Coast Raw to expand last month’s recall of raw pet food for cats.

The company announced an initial recall of two lots of their raw pet food on February 14th. The recall now includes a total of six lots of Wild Coast Raw’s 16-ounce and 24-ounce Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula raw pet food for cats. The lot numbers included in the recall are 22660, 22653, 22641, 22639, 22672, and 22664. All of the recalled lots have a “Best By” date of 12/25.

Wild Coast’s Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula is sold in a green cylindrical container with a white lid. The container features the brand name in yellow lettering printed against the backdrop of a mountain range. The product was distributed to retailers in Washington and Oregon. Customers can locate the lot number and “Best By” date on the sticker affixed to the product lid.

Wild Coast initiated the recall when testing by both the Oregon Department of Agriculture and the Washington State Department detected H5N1 in samples from the recalled lots of the company’s Boneless Free Range Chicken Formula.

Animals can acquire H5N1 from eating food that is contaminated with the virus. According to the FDA, symptoms of H5N1 infection in pets might include fever, fatigue, conjunctivitis, runny nose, and labored breathing. In more serious cases, infected pets can also experience neurological symptoms.

Additionally, humans handling contaminated pet food are at risk for developing H5N1. For this reason, humans should be careful to wash their hands and disinfect any dishes or surfaces that have come in contact with the contaminated food.

Wild Coast advises customers to refrain from feeding their cats food from the impacted lots. Customers can return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
