STATESVILLE, NC – Pet owners are advised that 1,350 pounds of Blue Ridge Beef Kitten Mix has been recalled by Blue Ridge Beef after FDA testing of one product sample revealed it to be contaminated with Salmonella.
While animals who consume the products are directly affected, humans who handle the recalled products or come into contact with surfaces exposed to the product, may become ill. Those who neglect to thoroughly wash their hands after becoming exposed are especially prone.
Consumers believed to have put themselves at risk for a Salmonella infection may experience a range of symptoms that include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (bloody or otherwise), pain in the abdomen, and fever. In certain cases, a Salmonella infection may advance into more severe conditions and will require medical intervention. Individuals should contact their healthcare providers if they experience any of the following after becoming exposed to the product: “arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.”
Although some pets infected with Salmonella may only show a reduced appetite, fever, or pain in the abdomen, others may exhibit lethargy, or suffer from diarrhea (bloody or otherwise), fever, and vomiting. Since pets who have consumed the recalled products but who are otherwise healthy could still be carrying the infection and pass it onto other animals or humans, consumers are asked to contact a veterinarian.
Blue Ridge Beef initiated the recall shortly after receiving a report of animal illness. Authorities with the Massachusetts Department of Agriculture Resources collected a sample of the product on December 12, 2024, and a test later conducted by the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory indicated that the sample was positive for the Salmonella organism. The FDA notified the firm about the positive test on January 3, 2025.
The affected 2-pound bags of Blue Ridge Beef Kitten Mix are listed under UPC (Universal Product Code) 854298001436 and Lot Number N25-0716. Distributed and made available for purchase from July 18, 2024 and July 26, 2024, the product comes in a clear plastic package and was found in retail stores across Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York.
Anyone who may still be in possession of a recalled product could consider one of two options: return the item to the point of purchase, or safely dispose of the product in a manner that will not be accessible by children, pets, or wildlife. The recalled kitten food should not be fed to any animal, and all bowls, cups, or containers that were exposed to the product should be washed and sanitized. Consumers should also ensure that their hands are properly sanitized after handling any recalled food or making contact with exposed surfaces.
